Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker Review

Some of the best games for each console come out just as the systems are on their deathbed, cursed to be overlooked as people abandon the old to embrace new systems. Such was the case with The addition of the Triangulum story elevates Record Breaker from the rest of the intergeneration re-releases that have become popular in the market as of late. While most games are content to offer just an HD (or, in this case, a 3D) upscale, the developers of Record Breaker created what’s essentially an entire second game for this package. While that’s impressive and commendable, it’s brought down a bit by the fact that there’s not really much new in terms of gameplay in the second half--you’re controlling (mostly) the same cast with the same traits, fusing similar demons to what you had before, and fighting similar enemies. There are a few new bosses, which offer some exceptionally challenging and satisfying fights, but for the most part, it’s just more Devil Survivor 2. That’s not a terrible thing, given that the core game is so solid, but it’s still a smidge disappointing given just how much went into creating a whole new story for the game. The other major issue is that the requirements for getting the “true endings” are too obtuse in both scenarios. While a few very clear paths lead to obvious conclusions, just getting the option to see the “best” endings requires you to make a lot of correct choices and talk to the right people at the right times. If you mess up just once, sorry buddy, better luck next time. The presence of only five save slots doesn’t really help either, especially if you want to run both scenarios. By the time I understood the requirements for getting the true ending in the Triangulum story, every save I had was at a point where it was impossible to go back. When it comes down to it, though, these complaints seem relatively minor. Devil Survivor 2, in both the original and Record Breaker incarnations, is a great strategy RPG, delivering a potent mix of intense, brilliantly designed combat and a fantastic, endearing cast of fellow survivors. If you missed out the first time around, you should absolutely hop on board for this extended trip to the Apocalypse. If you’re coming back for seconds, you’ll have a terrific time welcoming our new Triangulum overlords with Megido blasts right to their stupid geometric faces.

With its unique mix of turn-based and tactical combat, coupled with its story-heavy presentation based around character relationships and time, the Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor franchise could just as easily have been called Persona Tactics. The latest entry in this small but well-liked franchise is Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Record Breaker, a mouthful of a name for a game that's just as meaty. An enhanced port of the Nintendo DS original, it features the addition of complete voicework along with a brand new secondary story for players to experience. It also features a new, easier difficulty setting, making this one of the most accessible Shin Megami Tensei games ever.

The original version of 'Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2' was released in February 2012 for the original Nintendo DS. But before 'Devil Survivor 2' had even been released in the U.S., fans of the massive 'Shin Megami Tensei' series caught wind of other news: an enhanced version of the original 'Devil Survivor' title, named 'Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked' had hit the Nintendo 3DS in Japan, offering a plethora of upgrades from the 2009 original, including a meaty post-game scenario.

Its been a while since weve last seen Atluss Devil Survivor series, as the last Nintendo 3DS version came out back in 2011 and its successor hit western audiences the following year on the original Nintendo DS platform. Three years after the original version, Atlus is now releasing an enhanced port of Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 on the Nintendo 3DS with the new tagline Record Breaker. Similar to its predecessors Overclocked Nintendo 3DS port, this game includes the original game with some new features exclusive to the new iteration. Does it warrant picking up this new version for veterans of the original? If you enjoyed the original, that answer is yes.

Throughout my life, Ive had something of a complicated relationship with strategy-RPGs. In concept, the idea of an epic storyline told through a series of meaningful, challenging battles (instead of a flood of mindless random encounters) seems right up my alley. In practice, too many examples of the genre end up boring me with their overdeveloped narratives, bloated character rosters, and combat engines that can negate 20-plus minutes of effort after one tiny mistake on the part of the player. To get me into these games, I need something moresome hook, some quality I simply cant ignore.

Remember when the Nintendo 3DS was a doomed system that had no games and was destined to fail? I do. In August 2011, Ocarina of Time 3DS had come and gone, the system's fortunes, even after a price-drop, were still unsure and there simply wasn't all that much to play on Nintendo's newest handheld. Seems like a lifetime ago, right? During that early game drought, one title, even more than Ocarina of Time, had me coming back to my 3DS night after night - Shin Megami Tensai Devil Survivor: Overclocked. A refresh of a game that had appeared on the previous DS system, this SRPG set in the demon-battling world of SMT kept me busy for weeks. Now, we are finally getting a sequel to the outstanding original game in the form of Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker which, again, is a refresh of a game that previously appeared on the DS. But like Overclocked, there is so much more to do with this new version that even those who played and finished the original will still be able to squeeze 40-...

The Nintendo DS holds a special place in my heart. Years of road-tripping, traveling, and stealth-gameplay-sessions during study hall or concert band practice bonded that little red piece of hardware to me. I discovered many titles and genres I never would have played otherwise because of that DS, including the Devil Survivor series of Shin Megami Tensei games.

In this Review, Alexx discusses how Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker offers a strategic experience that sets itself apart from other RPG's stating - "Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker is a fantastic tactical RPG that offers a different sort of gameplay style focused more on strategic planning and preparation than most other RPGs. Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker puts an emphasis on preparation and values it above strategy, while also offering two difficulty levels, hours of gameplay, and multiple endings which offer replay value as well."
